Exhibition – Visual Arts

The Town of Narbonne Narbonne has implemented a program of showing and mediating of contemporary art among different audiences in different associations two places of Narbonne heritage : the chapel of the Pénitents Bleus and the Poudrière. It is also a way of offering its support to both associations and virtual artists of Narbonne but also to young contemporary artists.

  • The chapel of the Pénitents Bleus was built in the middle of XVIIIth century. Fully restored by the City in 1996, it is the home of setting, paintings and ironworks, both plain and luminous, offering today an ideal place for exhibition.Since its renovation, to preserve and keep alive its heritage, the Town of Narbonne, Art and History town, has chosen to present in this beautiful edifice of classical architecture, the work of contemporary artists which offer original and specific projects for this area, where events are organized (meetings, concerts, conferences) and for some a work in a home with the schools of Narbonne. It initiates and pusues here a willingness to act in favour of the current artistic creation while promoting and encouraging the discovery of an essential element of the heritage built in Narbonne by the general public. There, painters and artists find a privileged site where to go and meet an audience, increasingly curious facing contemporary art but also architecture and the environment around.

  • There is in the Poudrière, as in the chapel of the Pénitents Bleus, a temporary exhibition hall. Original element of Narbonne heritage located in the heart of the city, behind the ancient walls, this old powder magazine of the XVIIth century, has been restored and remodeled in the seventies. This unusual building is an interesting place for exhibition, mainly devoted to visual artists and associations of Narbonne. Next to the chapel of Pénitents Bleus, the two buildings sometimes propose exhibitions in two different spaces which are also an opportunity to discover the variety of architectural styles developed in the town center.
